The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) in the Upper West Region has intercepted a truck loaded with suspected illicit drugs and explosives at the Babile Inland Checkpoint.

In a statement issued by its Public Relations Officer, Ibn Yussif Duranah Abdul-Seidu, the Service said the operation was carried out on Monday, 23 March 2026, following intelligence received by officers.

According to the GIS, the vehicle, a Hyundai truck with registration number AC-1426-22, was travelling from Kumasi in the Ashanti Region to Hamile in the Upper West Region when it was stopped for inspection.

A joint search conducted on 26 March 2026 involving the GIS, Ghana Police Service, Narcotics Control Commission, and the Ghana Revenue Authority uncovered concealed items suspected to be explosives and controlled substances.

The items retrieved included detonating devices, sacks of dynamite and quantities of tramadol, reportedly hidden beneath other goods.

The GIS said the method of concealment appeared to be an attempt to evade detection but was foiled by officers at the checkpoint.

Authorities noted that personnel involved in the operation adhered to professional standards and resisted inducements.

The Service said investigations are ongoing to identify and arrest persons connected to the consignment.

The GIS has urged residents in the Upper West Region to remain calm and support security agencies with relevant information, while warning that attempts to obstruct security operations will be dealt with in accordance with the law.
