The government has announced a temporary intervention aimed at easing the impact of rising fuel prices on consumers, as volatility on the international petroleum market continues to push up domestic costs.

Under the measure, which takes effect from 16 April 2026, the State will absorb GHC2 per litre on diesel and GHC0.36 per litre on petrol. The intervention is intended to provide short-term relief to households, transport operators, and businesses facing increasing operational costs.

Government Communications Minister Felix Kwakye Ofosu, in a statement issued on Wednesday, said the decision follows sharp increases in global crude oil prices, which have directly translated into higher ex-pump prices in Ghana and exerted pressure across key sectors of the economy.

The policy, which has received Cabinet approval, will run for one month, during which government says it will monitor international market trends and determine whether further measures will be required to stabilise prices.

“Effective 16 April 2026, which is the next pricing window, the Government will absorb GHC2 per litre on diesel and GHC0.36 per litre on petrol,” the statement said.

“This intervention is intended to cushion customers and ease the cost burden on households, transport operators, and businesses.”

Fuel price increases have in recent months been identified as a major driver of inflation, with ripple effects on transport fares, goods, and services across the country. Analysts expect the latest intervention to provide temporary relief, particularly within the transport sector, where fuel costs significantly influence pricing structures.

The government reiterated its commitment to stabilising the economy and protecting livelihoods amid external shocks, stressing that it will continue to pursue policies aimed at sustaining price stability.

“Government remains committed to maintaining price stability, protecting livelihoods, and supporting Ghana’s economic recovery in the face of external shocks,” the statement added.
