Caleb Yirenkyi's dramatic stoppage-time winner against Panama may have given Ghana more than just three points after FIFA introduced a major change to the tiebreak rules for the 2026 World Cup.

The Black Stars opened their Group L campaign with a 1-0 victory in Toronto thanks to Yirenkyi's 95th-minute strike, moving level on three points with England.

However, the significance of that goal extends beyond Ghana's winning start.

For the 2026 tournament, FIFA has changed the order of the group-stage tiebreakers, with head-to-head record now taking precedence over goal difference when teams finish level on points.

That means Ghana already hold a crucial advantage over Panama after defeating the Central American side in their opening match.

If Panama were to beat either England or Croatia and finish level on points with Ghana at the end of the group stage, the Black Stars would still be ranked above them because of their head-to-head victory, regardless of goal difference.

The rule change makes Yirenkyi's late winner even more valuable as Carlos Queiroz's side continue their push for a place in the knockout rounds.

Ghana currently sit second in Group L behind England, who defeated Croatia 4-2 in their opening fixture.

The Black Stars face England next before concluding the group stage against Croatia, while Panama must recover against Croatia before taking on England in their final match.

With qualification expected to be decided by fine margins, Yirenkyi's goal could ultimately prove to be one of the most important moments of Ghana's World Cup campaign.
