The Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) has inaugurated the National Seed Council to provide strategic oversight for Ghana’s seed industry as government intensifies efforts to boost agricultural productivity and strengthen national food security.

The inauguration, held in Accra and administered by the Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture, John Dumelo, forms part of broader reforms aimed at improving access to quality planting materials and strengthening the country’s agricultural value chain.

The Council is expected to play a central role in regulating, coordinating and advancing Ghana’s seed sector to ensure farmers have access to improved, certified and climate-resilient seed varieties.

Speaking at the ceremony, Dumelo underscored the critical role of quality seeds in agricultural transformation, noting that investments in fertiliser, irrigation, mechanisation and Farmer Service Centres can only achieve maximum impact when supported by a robust and reliable seed system.

He stressed the need for more efficient approval and certification processes to enable local seed companies to supply improved varieties capable of withstanding drought, pests and emerging climate-related challenges affecting food production.

According to him, strengthening the seed sector is essential not only for boosting yields but also for safeguarding Ghana’s long-term food security and reducing reliance on imported agricultural inputs.

Chairman of the newly inaugurated Council, Alhaji Abubakari Mumuni, expressed appreciation for the confidence reposed in members and assured the Ministry of the Council’s commitment to delivering on its mandate.

He pledged that the Council would work closely with relevant stakeholders to ensure improved access to quality planting materials and the effective regulation of the seed value chain.

The establishment of the National Seed Council is expected to enhance Ghana’s agricultural productivity, support climate-smart farming practices and contribute to the country’s broader goal of achieving food self-sufficiency.
