President John Dramani Mahama has called for reforms to global governance institutions, arguing that the post-war multilateral system is under strain and must be reshaped to reflect current geopolitical realities.

Speaking at Chatham House in London on the theme “Navigating a Changing Global Order: Ghana’s Strategic Priorities,” he said international institutions should no longer be anchored on the power structures established in 1945, but must evolve to reflect contemporary global dynamics.

He reaffirmed Ghana’s support for reforms of the United Nations system, with particular emphasis on fair representation for Africa on the UN Security Council. He described the continent’s exclusion from permanent membership as a historical injustice and a structural imbalance that weakens the legitimacy of the global system.

Mahama highlighted Africa’s rising demographic and economic importance, noting that African integration has become both an economic necessity and a geopolitical imperative amid shifting trade blocs, supply chain disruptions and growing economic nationalism.

He also outlined the Accra Reset Initiative, which calls for a new framework of international cooperation built on equity, mutual respect, co-creation and shared responsibility.

The initiative seeks to strengthen sovereign capacity in areas including public health, pharmaceutical manufacturing, vaccine production, digital infrastructure, food security, industrialisation and strategic financing.

“The future of the multilateral system itself cannot be built on dependency; it must be built on dignity,” he said.

Mahama stressed that the success of global cooperation will depend on the ability of institutions to deliver fairness, inclusivity and meaningful participation for developing regions.

The engagement formed part of a broader diplomatic and policy dialogue on Ghana’s role in shaping global governance and international partnerships.
